We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic incident that took place on September 9, 2023, in Donetsk Oblast. It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the loss of two brave foreign volunteers and the injuries sustained by two others when their van was targeted by Russian artillery fire.
The volunteers, who were part of the NGO Road to Relief, were driving near the front-line town of Chasiv Yar at around 10 a.m. when this senseless attack occurred. Among those who lost their lives were Canadian volunteer Anthony “Tonko” Ihnat and Spanish volunteer and Road to Relief Director Emma Igual.
In this time of immense grief, our thoughts and prayers from The Henry Project extend to the friends and family of these dedicated volunteers. We cannot begin to comprehend the pain and sorrow they must be experiencing, but we hope they find solace in knowing that they are not alone.
The loss of Anthony and Emma is profoundly felt within the volunteer community here in Ukraine. Their selflessness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to making a difference were an inspiration for all. They touched the lives of countless individuals and brought hope to those who needed it most.
As we mourn the loss of these extraordinary individuals, let us also honor their memory by continuing the work they started. May we cherish their legacy and strive to build a world that is free from violence and conflict.
To all those affected by this tragedy, please know that we stand beside you as you navigate through this difficult time. We offer our support, our shoulders to lean on, and our listening ears.
May Anthony “Tonko” Ihnat and Emma Igual rest in eternal peace, knowing that their contributions will never be forgotten.
