Travel Desks & Host Families

On a fateful day, April 8, 2022, Johnathan Verroen found himself standing at the Medyka border, a symbolic crossroad between Ukraine and Poland. Little did he know that this moment would mark a pivotal turning point, not just in his life, but also for the countless Ukrainian people desperately seeking refuge from the ruthless clutches of the Russian invasion.

As Johnathan watched the poignant sight of hundreds of Ukrainian women and children, tired and traumatized, making their way into Poland, a deep sense of empathy stirred within him. It was at that very moment that he realized that he possessed not only the skills but also the passion and connections necessary to make a tangible difference. However, he knew he couldn’t do it alone.

Fate works in mysterious ways, they say, and it wasn’t long before Johnathan’s path intertwined with that of Anna McRobbie, a compassionate nurse hailing from Edmonton, Alberta. Like two kindred spirits brought together by the desire to alleviate suffering, they formed an unbreakable bond that would fuel their mission to aid the Ukrainian citizens in finding sanctuary.

With unwavering determination, Johnathan and Anna set out to establish travel desks at various crucial locations including the Tesco Refuge Centre in Przemysl, Warsaw, Lviv, and even Kyiv. These desks swiftly morphed into vital hubs where a dedicated team of volunteers assembled to assist Ukrainians in navigating the complexities of the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel visa.

But their help didn’t stop there. Recognizing the dire need for temporary housing while waiting for the necessary documents, Johnathan and Anna tirelessly worked to connect individuals with safe accommodations in Poland and other European countries. Their goal was not only to provide physical shelter but also to offer a glimmer of hope and comfort during such trying times.

However, their ultimate vision was to unite Ukrainian refugees with compassionate host families in Canada. With heartfelt determination, they pushed forward, collaborating with local organizations across Canada to facilitate the resettlement of over 200 Ukrainians in their new home country. The overwhelming success of this endeavor was a testament to the power of collective action driven by a shared commitment to compassion and support.

Johnathan and Anna’s story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us of the profound change that can emerge when individuals come together in solidarity. Their tireless efforts not only transformed the lives of those affected by the crisis but also stood as a shining example of how empathy and dedication can bring light to even the darkest of times. In the face of immense adversity, Johnathan and Anna proved that ordinary individuals can rise to extraordinary heights, demonstrating the true power of humanity’s inherent goodness. Their selfless acts will forever serve as a reminder of what we can achieve when we extend a helping hand and stand united in times of dire need.
